Jurgen Klopp says ‘no decision’ has yet been made regarding Mohamed Salah’s potential participation in the Olympics this summer.

The Liverpool star has been named on Egypt’s provisional 50-man list for the football tournament ahead of Tokyo 2020, with the North African nation keen to include the 27-year-old as one of their three over-age players.

Salah’s involvement in the competition would see him miss a significant period of the Reds’ pre-season and their first fixtures of the new campaign, the final of the Olympic football tournament scheduled for August 8, the first day of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Egypt coach Shawky Gharib has said the choice will be left with the player and Liverpool, though Klopp insists no decision has yet been made about the involvement of their top scorer.

“No decision,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference. “Do I want to lose the player in pre-season? Of course not. But we have to consider different things.

“I speak with Mo and we are completely clear about what we want. But we need more information. How would it look? When would the preparation start?

“All of that stuff and no one has really contacted us yet. We’ve had to play without Mo before. But it is the Olympics, and I’m still a sportsperson.”
