Real Madrid Carvajal’s wasted journey, Kroos’ wondergoal…
Real Madrid will face the opponents they began their season against when they host Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Los Blancos got their league campaign underway with a 3-1 win against the Galician club at Balaidos in August.
We’ve looked back at some of the talking points from that match in the Spanish summer sunshine.
Having picked up his fifth yellow card at the end of the previous season, Carvajal was initially suspended for this game.
That was until the Spanish Football Federation changed the legislation and stated that players like Carvajal would be allowed to play.
So, the right-back travelled to Vigo expecting to play but, once Real Madrid arrived there, the situation had changed again. Carvajal ended up watching from the stands.
Referee Javier Estrada Fernandez applied the new rules about dangerous challenges for the start of the season.
Modric was given a straight red card in the 56th minute for standing on Denis Suarez‘s heel, even though the Croatian insisted he had no intention to hurt his opponent.
With Karim Benzema‘s goal the difference, Celta thought they’d scored an equaliser in first-half stoppage time when Iago Aspas set up Brais Mendez to finish but, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside. “I saw the play and there was no offside,” Aspas said afterwards.
After a summer full of criticism, Vazquez silenced his doubters after scoring the third goal of the game. He put his fingers in his ears in celebration and posted the picture on social media afterwards. “Listen, shut up and work,” he said.
Toni Kroos’ wondergoal
The German loves a goal against Celta – he’s scored five against them during his time in Spain – and this one was a strike to remember. He picked up the ball miles from goal and arrowed a shot into the top corner, clipping the crossbar on its way in.
Celta‘s late consolation goal was scored by 18-year-old Losada on his LaLiga Santander debut. The youngster has barely featured for the Galicians since, though.
Celta boss Escriba took advantage of the defeat to send a message to the club’s board. “The gamble on the academy is really amazing, but sometimes it limits us. You at their substitutes and look at ours,” he said.
“It wasn’t his best press conference. He said one thing but is transmitting something else to me,” sporting director Felipe Minambres responded. “He’s delighted with the boys and says they’re all performing at a high level.”
After plenty of back and forth between Zinedine ZIdane and Bale‘s agent in the summer, the Welshman was given a surprising start at Balaidos.
